Consumption of<br \/>\ncontaminated drinking water is particularly<br \/>\nproblematic in third world countries where<br \/>\ninadequate purification processes, coupled with<br \/>\nrapidly increasing population growth and<br \/>\nindustrialization pose serious health risks. One of<br \/>\nthe most common and deadly contaminants found in<br \/>\nwater is arsenic (As). Arsenic, a heavy metal, is a<br \/>\nkey toxic contaminant in the drinking water supply<br \/>\nof third world countries, often exceeding 10 \u03bcg\/L<br \/>\nmaximum limit set by World Health Organization<br \/>\n(WHO) regulations (World Health Organization,<br \/>\n2006). As contamination of drinking water is also<br \/>\nfound domestically, where 13 million people in the<br \/>\nUnited States are affected by exposure; these<br \/>\nnumbers dramatically increase where drinking<br \/>\nwater restrictions are less rigid. For example, 45-57<br \/>\nmillion people in Bangladesh have been exposed to<br \/>\n10 \u03bcg\/L or more of arsenic in water (Yang, 2010).<br \/>\nThe necessity of an effective system to remove<br \/>\narsenic from water is all too great. Current methods<br \/>\nemployed in some countries lack sensitivity, and are<br \/>\nonly effective in dealing with large concentrations<br \/>\nof arsenic in water, such as 100 \u03bcg\/L. These<br \/>\nsystems often leave residual As concentrations<br \/>\nabove the 10 \u03bcg\/L restriction set by WHO,<br \/>\n(Pittman, 2007). System enhancements are possible,<br \/>\nbut the cost of improvements remains prohibitive<br \/>\nfor many areas. However, recent studies have<br \/>\ndemonstrated that iron oxides have a high affinity<br \/>\nfor heavy metals such as arsenic and have opened<br \/>\nthe door as a cost-effective way to remove<br \/>\npollutants from water (Yavuz et al. 2009).<br \/>\nFerrofluids, which are suspensions of nanoparticles<br \/>\nof magnetite (a ferrous-ferric oxide), are magnetic,<br \/>\nstable, colloidal, and homogenous. (Maity, 2006).<br \/>\nSuch particles are typically suspended in a carrier<br \/>\nand can respond to a magnetic field but retain no<br \/>\nresidual magnetism once the field is lifted.<br \/>\nMagnetite nanoparticles in a liquid carrier can be<br \/>\nmanipulated by a magnetic field, retain no residual<br \/>\nmagnetic properties, and have demonstrated the<br \/>\ngeneral iron oxide affinity for heavy metals (Yavuz<br \/>\net al 2009).<br \/>\nIn the current investigation, the adsorption of<br \/>\narsenic by magnetite nanoparticles was evaluated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Additionally, methods and conditions that facilitate<br \/>\nthe removal of As by nanoparticles was evaluated.<br \/>\nResults of optimized conditions were compared to<br \/>\nWHO standards and data from previous studies to<br \/>\naccurately gauge the accuracy of results and<br \/>\napplications thereon. Due to the small particle size,<br \/>\neasy manipulation, and cost effectiveness of<br \/>\nproduction, use of magnetite nanoparticles to<br \/>\nremove arsenic from water could prove to be very<br \/>\nfeasible, particularly in less industrialized countries.<br \/>\nAltered conditions in this investigation were pH and<br \/>\nthe surfactant type. Three types of nanoparticles<br \/>\nwere tested- bare (uncoated), oleic acid coated, and<br \/>\nhumic acid coated.
